Default 5th wheel / gooseneck adapters question...

Ok guys, as you all know, I have a friend who I've been helping research toy Haulers, trucks, etc.
He now has a '06 Chebby 2500 HD SRW 4x4 CC Duramax/Allison.
The 1/2 ton has been sold.

He just now called me and said that the Harley Fatboy just sold too.
So now all that's left is the 230, and 450.

He is getting close now, and almost has the cash for a TH.
The newer truck that he bought, came with a Gooseneck pin in the bed.
He is leaning towards a 5'ver TH.
We have seen/ heard of the adapters, that can be installed on the 5'ver,... to allow for it being towed with the Gooseneck pin in the bed.

The claimed advantage for using these adapters is that you do not lose bed space in the truck bed, to a large 5'ver hitch.

Here is a link to one I found on ebay, as well as a installation video....

http://inlandempire.craigslist.org/rvs/2173383020.html

http://www.andersenhitches.com/categ...d-b6e57f46ae5d

So my questions to you guys are,

1- how do you guys feel about these ?
2- can you see any DISADVANTAGES to using this set-up, vs. a regular 5'ver hitch in th bed of the truck?
3- are there any safety / strength issues?
4- does anyone here have any personal experience or knowledge in using these types of adapters?
5- what are your thoughts in general on these?

As always, Thanks in advance for you thoughts and replies.
I am sending him a link to this thread, and I'm sure he will soon be wanting to join the forum here so that he can ask his own questions.

His name is Mark, and he has told me to say Thanks for all the help you guys have already been.

Ron

Ron, tell Mark this...

I personally had a gooseneck set up on my truck/trailer. Loved it, yes you can extra space.

BAD part though is this, gooseneck set ups on 5th wheels do not allow for movement within "system". It is a hard connect. All the bumps in the road will be absorded into the trailer. I caught mine just in time as the frame assembly that holds the 5th wheel pin was about to snap in half.

When I took it to the shop ($2400 in repairs) the shop owner told me that 5th wheel frames do not really have the extra cross support that typicaly built gooseneck trailers do (if you look they all have cross supports off at a 45 degree angle.

So I spent the money to change to a standard 5th wheel hitch, with a spring loaded head, and what a difference in ride while towing!

So my advice ..."no gooseneck"...of course others might disagree, this is just my opinion.

I asked the guy who installed my 5th wheel hitch about goosenecks. I can't remember the reasons why, but I remember after talking to him that the gooseneck was NOT a good idea for a toyhauler. I think the reasons Rich gives in this thread were a part of it.

This is my first post, Thanks Aaron for fixing it,

and thanks to everyone else who has been helping me out (through Ron), in finding the right truck, and rig.
Now I can ask all the stuff myself.

This will be my first Toyhauler, but I have owned other RV's in the past.
(It's a old class A that now lives at Golden shores, Topoc, Colorado River).

Ron tells me that one or two of you here like ,
I'll try to hold up the tradition as best as I can

I have this on my 5th wheel. I can put a glass of water on the counter and it will still be there when I get to my destination. And it's easy to hook up to the truck. Side to side motion well... that's another story.
Welcome.
