View Full Version : Rebuilding front of car

Marcus and I have begun rebuilding the front of the car. Several cracks developed after the MORE 500, in May. What we thought was the good side, that wasn't welded on at the 500, was cracked 180 degrees around the 1- 3/4 inch rear tube and bent. I could fit my finger in the gap with a straight edge on it.

I'm making new arms now. I first had to learn how to Tig weld. Here is one taking shape in the jig.

Here it is with both trusses done.

The arms will be plated to act as both a gusset and skid plate. The existing mounts on the car will be cut off and rebuilt aroung these arms. All the heims are the same size now, same as the outside spindle heim. They will be allot heavier than the old arms and stronger.

Funny thing about that kind of work... You can work on something for 8 hrs and when you look at what was done at the end of the day you say to yourself, that looks like 2 hrs work what happened to the other 6 :vik:

Tig is a slow way to weld compaired to Mig. You have to wait for puddle to form just like gas welding. Duty cycle and the torch gets hot when it's time to take a break. Lots of breaks.

The arms are ready for plating. Here are two views from the bottom/front and front. The bottom has a truss on both legs.

was wondering the same thing, angle could change shock rate quite a bit.

Maybe for a limit strap?

The single lower outer tab is for the limit strap. Its welded to a .25 inch triangular plate which is perimeter welded into the arm. This stops the shock and limit strap opposing forces from tweaking the arm laterally and causing stress cracks, which eventually causes catastrophic failure.

Not against rules that I know of, but looks like shit after one race. The bare metal (non cro-mo) is clear coated to slow the rust down.

Ah!

The limit tabs is a great design. Good job.

Linseed oil also good to coat the tube.

Think most do it cuz its easier to see a crack starting. Can be repaired before it becomes a major problem.

Crack Kills :vib:
