I'm going to keep posting the races under Durkee Racing even though diirk can't make it out there anymore. We miss you and Wendy. We also miss Duane and Todd, sucks you guys have to work so much.

This race is in Lucerne Valley. It starts at 10 am and runs into the night. If anyone wants to come out and help pit, or just watch, we will have a sign facing the road with 3030 on it. Stop by and make yourself at home.

091.

We talked to the builder and Karl Scanlan who races a few of these. Mike is going to look into a Folts (sp?) 2d.

Nope, it's a modified Mendi 2d. Stronger case. Same Weddle innards.

The whole block heard me backing it off the trailer. Backing it over the wheel wells was loud. It's got more than marbles rattling around in that case.

Right after Karl passed me, and we went into the right hander, the tranny started a LOUD whine. Thought it was feed back in the intercom from the alternator or belt going... stopped, and took a look. When we stopped we got a wiff of something into the blower. Every thing looked ok... no fluids, belt look and felt fine. Started off again thinking it was the alt... had Brandon turn the squelch down... damn it. The whine was loud enuf to hear... the reason we heard it in the intercom was the mic was picking it up. Yikes... 3rd started slipping out, and I couldnt find 2nd. Once I got into the wash and twisting around the huge boulders, I had to find second, and finally did. But then third was gone... as was 4th. Back into second and thats when the grinding started. Managed to get out of the wash in 2nd, and pull off course. COuldnt raise pit from there, so we sought out a powerline rd, and limped back to pit in 2nd.

not sure where the audio track went (no music, should have been just cam audio)

The 2d isn't bad. See if they can do something about the reverse gear too, it's a notorious weak spot (or was). Only use to back out of the trailer, if that!

I'd also look at the Weddle HV1

There's a Mende 5D on RDC for sale.

I saw that. I'm going to need the gearing changed if I buy used so I'm looking for a 3000 guy that has one or a new one. The shop that built the dead trans has the Weddle for $7k. http://ranchotransaxles.com/weddle-transaxles.html
I need to visit Folts and ask about there CV's and axles with the trans. Karl recommended that route.

Folts sells the Weddle also. I really like the Hv-1.

Pretty good deal. It would work. Might require regearing though.

@lsoran

It would work but both Brian (Fusion) and Karl Scanlan both mentioned the weak case on mendi"s. If you compare it to the Weddle, http://ranchotransaxles.com/weddle-transaxles.html it's a big difference in strength. They both recommended different builders but agreed on the case. I like the HV1. I'm going to talk to Folts when I get a Chance to see what price I can get.
Once I decide and purchase the trans, I will be looking for a back-up like that one. I wouldn't really care if the gearing is off a bit. As long as it would work.

Whatever backup you have will need the same mounting points as your primary trans. Or maybe you can build some adapters to get it to fit. Otherwise it would be useless. I'd say go with the HV-1 and trans cooler and call it a day. Pull the trigger and you can have it done by the next race.

The HV-1 is what I'm looking at. I just need to get down there and talk to someone. I want to know what other cases or trannys use the same mounts. The cooler is a smart idea. The car had a trans gauge in it when I bought it but no cooler.

Plus with an external cooler and filter, you can change out the fluid way easier and increase capacity. Win/win.

I have a better idea, Sell your buggie and buy this http://www.race-dezert.com/cgi-bin/trader/atl.cgi?ct=5&md=second&id=9648 (http://www.race-dezert.com/cgi-bin/trader/atl.cgi?ct=5&md=second&id=9648)then come race BITD, we could use the competition. 8100 is one of the top classes when it comes to pay back.

I think he should keep the buggy and use it as the prerunner for the Fabtech truck. FTW!

I'm thinking next race vehicle will be a truck, I like sitting up higher. That's a good deal. Timing is a little off for me :(

I like Trucks. That truck is a killer deal, It FAST and there is a ton of parts to go with it. Tim won enough last year to just about pay for the whole season. You cant beat that.

I'd still take 22" of travel in the buggy over 14" in that truck...

A 3000 truck that's 7200 legal would be cool.

I've always been a truck fan... however, after driving Mike's buggy with 22" of travel, I think that buggies could be the way to go, unless you have the budget and skills to build a truck with comparable travel and power to weight ratio. The cool factor of a trophy truck is great, if you have the budget to build/prep/run/fix it as well.
